Pizza delivery drivers have many different ways to rate individual pizza deliveries. Some may like the corporate delivery where a driver is given a $40.00 tip and others may like delivering pizzas to a house filled with Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Oh yeah, that’d be cool. I’ve experienced one of the above, but my favorite delivery of all was driving some pizzas donated by the Uptown i Fratelli location to American Legion Post #453 near Bachman Lake in Dallas.

After talking to Ford Motor Company about doing a blog post for them on 8 Great 2014 Ford Vehicles for Pizza Delivery, Ford asked if I had contacts with pizzerias who might like to donate pizzas for charity and Ford said they’d provide the delivery vehicle. That sounded great to me. We finally settled on feeding veterans after the 2013 Veterans Day Parade in downtown Dallas. Logistically, things did not work out the way we had planned.

It is absolutely great when things don’t work out as planned and actually work out better. After making our way to Dallas City Hall, we found out that delivery after the parade wouldn’t be possible. The people just wouldn’t be there to eat all the pizza we were going to deliver. First thing we needed to do is go tell i Fratelli in Uptown that we needed half as many pizzas and we’d find someplace else to deliver them. I had the brilliant idea earlier that morning to visit VFW and American Legion posts and deliver pizza from other pizzerias after our big i Fratelli pizza giveaway. So I had a list of posts and started making calls. The first one I called was the Love Field American Legion Post. They were happy to have a free lunch. My son and I were happy to deliver it. Giving free pizza to veterans who fought for our country is such a little token of our appreciation. We wish we could’ve done more.

Being someone who has always tried to good for others, even with our pizza website, which donates proceeds from online orders, to the Himalayan Cataract Project, I was happy to deliver free pizzas to veterans who do so much good in the community.

Post commander Charlie Peoples told me about some of the good works post #453 undertakes on a regular basis, including helping homeless vets, “We help feed and clothe the homeless soldiers in Dallas. We spent over $13,000 doing this just last month.”

After a little talk with GySgt. Stephens as he devoured slice after slice of i Fratelli pizza, he told me about their help with the Dallas area Wounded Warrior Program and the Fisher House. PFC Nixon told me about other good works the post is involved with such as providing food, clothing and more for vets who are going through hard times. Actually, the list of good works that this and other American Legion posts does goes on and on. I was very ignorant of the good done by American Legion posts in our communities and this pizza delivery taught me a lot.

Nope, this is not the set of Expendables 3. But GySgt. Stephens and PFC Nixon sure look like they could be in that upcoming film.

It was a true pleasure, and I mean that in all sincerity, delivering pizza (donated by I frattelli) to these American heroes, our Veterans. A big thanks goes out to Ford Motor Company and i frattelli for allowing us at Pizzaspotz.com to be part of this great pizza delivering, my favorite ever! It couldn’t have been done without both of these great companies. The veterans we helped serve said “Thank you.”
