3. Lake Annecy

Lake Annecy is the second largest lake in France. It is also the cleanest lake in all of Europe. Not many places in Europe, let alone France, have such stunning views of such large bodies of water as this lake with mountain vistas (French Alps) on the other side. Great photography opportunities. Many great places to shop nearby, wonder exercise opportunities too. The lake is fed by many small rivers from the surrounding mountains (Ire, Eau morte, Laudon, Bornette and Biolon), and from a powerful underwater source, the Boubioz, which enters at 82 m depth.

Probably one of the most beautiful lakes on this planet. Surrounded by the Alps monntains on one side and the city of Annecy and its historic “vieille ville” on the other side. It is known to be the cleanest lake in Europe and attracts many tourists especially in summer.

2. French Alps Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in the Alps, rises to a staggering height of 15,782 ft (4,810m) above sea level. There are only ten other mountains in the world which stand taller than this natural wonder of France. The nearest French town to Mont Blanc is Chamonix, site of the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924.

Odd Fact: In 2007, two outhouses were helicoptered to the top of France’s Mont Blanc at a height of 4,260 metres (13,976 feet). The outhouses are the two highest in Europe. The facilities service the 30,000 skiers and hikers who annually trek to Mont Blanc. These outhouses help prevent the deposit of urine and feces that spread down the mountain face with the spring thaw… ewww yuck.

And finally number one in our list of the seven natural wonders in France to visit after eating at an international airport pizzeria is……

1. The Camargue

The Camargue has an area of over 360 square miles) and is western Europe’s largest river delta. It has many large brine lagoons or étangs and many reed-covered marshes. About one-third of the Camargue is either lakes or marshland.

The Camargue was named a wetland of international importance in 1986 by the Ramsar Convention. The Camargue is home to over 400 species of birds, including the beautiful greater flamingo. This is one of the few places in Europe these flamingos live.

For birdwatchers alone, this is the most beautiful of the seven natural wonders of France. But beware, The Camargue is also home to some of the most ferocious mosquitoes found in all of France.

Remember, the Camargue is not a natural wonder to be viewed in one day, it is best to lodge at a hotel in or near the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. One of the best would be Hotel Le Petit Mas Des Barres just outside the village.
